It is my conviction that the lecture room and other places where teaching and learning take place should be congenial atmosphere for students to be of their natural selves. As a result, I always strive to interact with students by creating a lecture room that encourages discuss and generates new learning. It is my utmost conviction that by involving students as active participants during discussions is the foundation to developing critical thinking skills. A necessary skill to solving the twenty-first century challenges confronting the world of work.

Another teaching philosophy of mine is to create a congenial environment where respect is share between the lecturer as a facilitator and student. I always keep an open mind about students’ ability by not critiquing unnecessarily students’ submission but encourage them to think outside the box. As has been by mantra – “Think outside the Box”. In that regard, the use of Problem Based Learning (PBL) and field visits are integral part of the courses I teach. This method of learning presents an opportunity for students to unravel the hidden talents in them.

My philosophy of teaching enables students to apply theory to real life situation and not see my teaching as an abstract phenomenon. I teach public health related courses and so connecting the dots is very important in achieving a holistic teaching and learning. Transfer of learning is very crucial here.

I foster life-long learning and deep civic obligation by sharing my expertise and experiences with my students, by encouraging them to be responsible and respectful young people. I encourage my students to eschew materialism, greed, and deceit as they strive to become responsible citizens.
