Dr Eric Agyarkoh is a lecturer of Communication Design in the Department of Vocational and Technical Education in the faculty of Science and Technology Education, College of Education Studies of University of Cape Coast. He hails from the Royal Nsona Family of Korado in the Abura- Asebu-Kwamankese District of the Central Region of Ghana. He was born in Bibiani in the Western Region of Ghana and had his basic education there. He pursued Painting and Decorating Craft certificate course at Cape Coast Technical Institute from 1988 to 1991. Whiles at Cape Coast Technical Institute, he enrolled at Model Art and Designing Services (MADS), Cape Coast as Signwriting apprentice and worked there until his appointment by Ghana Education Service in 1996.
After completing Cape Coast Technical Institute, he proceeded to Takoradi Polytechnic from 1992 to 1994 to offer the Advanced craft certificate course in Painting and Decorating. After one -year national service, he was employed in Ghana Education Service in 1996 as a technical tutor and taught Technical Drawing and Technical Skills at Catholic Girls’ Junior High School, Elmina, Central Region. In 1997, he was transferred to the Painting and Decorating Department of Asuansi Technical Institute where he taught Art and Design, Painting and Decorating Theory and Practical. In 1999, he did one-year certificate course in Education at University College of Education of Winneba, Kumasi Campus and he was posted back to Asuansi Technical Institute upon completion.
In 2002, he enrolled at Takoradi Polytechnic to pursue Higher National Diploma (HND) programme in Commercial Art (Graphic Design Option) and graduated with first class. In 2005, he was posted to Kwegyir Aggrey Senior High Technical School, Anomabo, Central Region where he started the Visual Arts Programme. At Kwegyir Aggrey Senior High Technical School, he taught Graphic Design, Picture Making and General Knowledge in Art. He also taught Graphic Design in a number of Junior High and Senior High Schools in Cape Coast, Elmina and Mankesim respectively on part-time engagements.
From 2007 to 2010, he pursued bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Design at University of Education, Winneba and graduated with first Class Honours. In 2011, he enrolled in the Master of Philosophy degree in Arts and Culture programme (Advertising major) in the same university and completed in 2013, and in 2015, he enrolled on a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Arts and Culture programme (Advertising major) in the same university and completed in 2018.
In 2012, he and his friend Mr. James Ekow Appiah were tasked by the Vocational and Technical Education (VOTEC) Department of University of Cape Coast to develop new programmes in Visual Arts for the department. Through had work they have been able to develop two new programmes for the department. Namely, Bachelor of Education in Communication Design and Bachelor of Fine Art Education (Painting or sculpture options). The programmes were introduced in the department in the 2019/2020 academic year.
In 2016, he was appointed Assistant Lecturer of Communication Design in the (VOTEC) Department of University of Cape Coast. He is currently a lecturer in the Communication Design unit of the (VOTEC) Department of University of Cape Coast and teach courses in Global art History, Lettering and Typography, Basic Design and Colour Psychology, Communication Illustration, Still-picture Photography, Curriculum Studies in Art and Industrial Printing Technology.
