I am an Associate Professor in the Department of Mathematics at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Ghana, where I conduct research and teach in computational mathematics, artificial intelligence (AI), numerical methods, scientific computing and mathematical modelling. I hold a PhD in Computational Mathematics and an MSc in Industrial Mathematics from Johannes Kepler University Linz, Austria, as well as an MSc in Mathematics from the Technical University of Kaiserslautern, Germany, and a BSc in Mathematics from Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana.
My research is interdisciplinary and focuses on the application of mathematics, computational science and artificial intelligence to complex real-world problems. My research interests include artificial intelligence, machine learning, numerical methods for partial differential equations, numerical linear algebra, scientific computing and biomathematical modelling. In recent years, I have increasingly focused on the intersection of AI, mathematical modelling and applications in healthcare, epidemiology, climate and environmental systems, and African language technologies.
I am particularly interested in developing AI and data-driven approaches that are relevant to African contexts. I am a co-founder and Director of Programmes at Ghana Natural Language Processing (Ghana NLP), where I have contributed to research and the development of technologies for low-resource African languages. Through this work, I have been involved in the development of language datasets, machine translation, speech technologies and Khaya AI, a platform designed to support translation across African languages. This work has also involved training and mentoring researchers and developers in natural language processing and AI.
My work in AI also extends to healthcare. I have contributed to research on African medical question-answering, multimodal biomedical AI, epidemiological modelling and the application of machine learning to health-related problems. I have served as a consultant, principal investigator and co-principal investigator on research projects supported by organisations including Google and international research programmes. My research has attracted grants and collaborations spanning artificial intelligence, African languages, humanitarian applications of AI, health and computational modelling.
I have published extensively in international peer-reviewed journals in computational mathematics, mathematical biology, epidemiology, numerical analysis, scientific computing and AI-related applications. My earlier research focused strongly on discontinuous Galerkin methods, isogeometric analysis, finite element methods and numerical solutions of partial differential equations. I have subsequently expanded this work into mathematical epidemiology, stochastic and fractional-order models, machine learning and interdisciplinary computational research.
At UCC, I teach undergraduate and postgraduate courses in mathematics, numerical analysis, computational mathematics and related areas, and I supervise students at undergraduate, master's and doctoral levels. I have also served as a visiting scholar, visiting researcher and visiting professor at institutions in Africa and Europe, including the Pan African University Institute for Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation in Kenya, the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences, the University of L'Aquila in Italy and institutions in Germany, Austria and France.
Beyond teaching and research, I am committed to building research capacity and creating opportunities for African researchers and students. I organise and contribute to academic seminars, workshops and conferences in computational mathematics, AI and data science, and I actively mentor students and early-career researchers. I also contribute to discussions on responsible and ethical AI, particularly the development and deployment of AI systems that are inclusive, trustworthy and responsive to the needs of African societies.
My broader goal is to contribute to the development of a strong African research and innovation ecosystem in which mathematics, artificial intelligence and data science are used responsibly to address local and global challenges. I believe that Africa should not only be a consumer of AI technologies but should also play a leading role in developing the mathematical foundations, data, models, infrastructure, talent and governance frameworks needed to shape the future of AI.
