Samuel Sonko Sackey (PhD)

Samuel Sonko Sackey is a Senior Lecturer with the Department of Physics of the University of Cape Coast (UCC), and the immediate past Coordinator of the Laser and Fibre Optics Centre (LAFOC), Department of Physics, UCC.
He holds Ph.D. and M.Phil. Degrees awarded to him from the University of Cape Coast, and a B.Sc. (Hons) in Physics awarded to him from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Kumasi, Ghana.
His area of expertise is Optical Spectroscopy and its Applications; Atmospheric Trace Gas Emission Monitoring Using DOAS Technique; Elemental Analysis of Materials Using Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy (AAS) and Neutron Activation Analysis (NAA) Techniques and Water Quality Analysis.
Dr. S. S. Sackey is the immediate past Coordinator of the Laser and Fibre Optics Centre (LAFOC) of the Department of Physics of the University of Cape Coast. He was the Coordinator from 2016 to 2020. LAFOC is an African Regional Centre of Excellence established to provide training for researchers, engineers, science teachers, medical personnel and other allied professionals. This is in the field of Lasers and Fibre Optics technology as applied to Medicine, Agriculture, Industry, Communication and Environmental Studies. Before his appointment as the Coordinator, he was the Examinations Officer for the Department of Physics and a Student’s Academic Advisor.
He has won a number of Grants/Awards, some of which include a Research Support Grant (RSG) for Group-led and Inter-Departmental Research Sponsored by Directorate of Research, Innovation and Consultancy (DRIC), University of Cape Coast (2018), and awards from the International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) Programme for Training and Research in Italian Laboratories (TRIL) at ISAC-CNR, Bologna, Italy.
As a lecturer, he handles courses in his field of study at all levels and is an examiner for postgraduate thesis (M.Phil. and Ph.D.) at the University of Cape Coast. He has presented research papers at both National and International Conferences, published in reputable journals and reviews articles for various International Journals. He is a Research Fellow at the Institute of Atmospheric Science and Climate of Centre for National Research (ISAC-CNR), Bologna, Italy; a Member of Ghana Science Association (GSA) and University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG).
