Emmanuel Kusi Achampong is Professor of Health Informatics in the Department of Medical Education and Information Technology at the School of Medical Sciences, University of Cape Coast. His scholarship sits at the intersection of information systems and clinical practice, and is concerned principally with how digital infrastructure can be designed, implemented, and evaluated so that it measurably improves the quality of care delivered in resource-constrained health systems.
He holds a PhD in Information Technology from Open University Malaysia (2017), an MSc in Health Informatics from the University of Ghana (2007), and a BSc in Chemistry from the University of Cape Coast (2004). He served as Head of the Department of Medical Education and Information Technology from August 2016 to July 2021, and continues to hold substantive teaching and supervisory responsibilities on the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) programme.
Professor Achampong has published extensively in peer-reviewed international journals, with work appearing in JAMA Network Open, BMC Health Services Research, BMJ Health and Care Informatics, Healthcare Informatics Research, Vaccines, and the Journal of Medical Education and Curricular Development, among others. He is a member of the International Medical Informatics Association and the Ghana Health Informatics Association, and serves as a peer reviewer for several journals in health informatics and medical education, including Healthcare Informatics Research and the International Journal of Medical Informatics. In 2024, he joined the Better Evidence Training Programme at Ariadne Labs.
Research Interests
Professor Achampong's research interests are organised around four related lines of enquiry:
Electronic health record systems in low and middle-income settings. A substantial body of his recent work evaluates Ghana's national deployment of the Lightwave Health Information Management System (LHIMS), examining its effect on the dimensions of healthcare data quality, the efficiency with which health professionals use it, their satisfaction with it, and the organisational and infrastructural constraints that limit its benefit at the point of care.
Artificial intelligence and clinical decision support in medicine. He is concerned with the conditions under which algorithmic tools can be deployed responsibly in African clinical settings, including questions of data quality, workflow integration, clinician trust, and governance.
Digital health competencies and informatics curricula. He has assessed the informatics curricula of nursing and midwifery training institutions in Ghana and contributed to the international Delphi consensus that produced the Digital Health Competencies in Medical Education framework, published in JAMA Network Open in 2025.
Health information systems, mHealth, and eHealth policy. His earlier work documented the state of information and communication technology and health informatics in Ghana and examined the effects of mobile phone use in clinical practice, establishing an evidence base on which much of his subsequent work builds.
Teaching and Supervision
Professor Achampong teaches medical informatics and nursing and midwifery informatics to medical and nursing students. He adopts a student-centred approach, structuring courses around active participation, applied problem solving, and assessment that tests application and analysis rather than recall alone. He supervises postgraduate research in health informatics, health information management, and digital health.
Academic Leadership and Service
Beyond his departmental headship, Professor Achampong contributes to institutional development in medical education technology at the University of Cape Coast, including work on curriculum development, learning management and document management systems, and the establishment of institutional capacity in health informatics. He has contributed to international consensus work in digital health education, most recently as a member of the multinational Delphi panel that developed the Digital Health Competencies in Medical Education framework, and his research on national electronic health record systems has been conducted in collaboration with colleagues in the Ministry of Health and the Ghana Health Service.
