Dr. Sika Abrokwah is a research fellow at the Centre for Coastal Management – Africa Centre of Excellence in Coastal Resilience at the University of Cape Coast with an interest in coastal environmental management. She has a PhD in Geography and Regional Planning. and an MPhil in Environmental Science. Her main area of research is in the management of marine plastics. Specifically, her focus is understanding the sources of marine litter (pathways of leakage and quantification) and the socio-economic and behavioural drivers influencing the generation of marine litter. She believes these are critical knowledge gaps within the African sub-region which need to be filled to support the development of effective plastic waste reduction policies and intervention programmes. To contribute to filling these gaps, in collaboration with the UK’s Ocean Country Partnership Programme (OCPP), Dr. Abrokwah led the development and delivery of the first West Africa Marine Litter Training Programme geared towards building the capacity of young West Africans to conduct marine litter research to fill these knowledge gaps. She also spearheaded the establishment of the first state-of-the-art OCPP microplastic laboratory at the University of Cape Coast. She has also coordinated marine litter research projects commissioned by the OCPP, the EAF Nansen Programme of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Conservation International respectively. She is the co-chair of the Metrics task force and a member of the Behaviour task force of the Ghana National Plastic Action Partnership (NPAP). Aside from this, she also worked as the Centre’s grants manager, identifying calls, coordinating and supporting grant writing efforts of colleagues from January 2019 to December 2025. In total, she has attracted and coordinated over US$800,000.00 worth of grants, consultancies and support at the Centre since joining the team in 2020. She has co-authored several scientific publications, technical reports and working papers.

Teaching & projects
My teaching philosophy is grounded in pragmatism, which views learning as an active process of constructing knowledge through real-life experiences and meaningful engagement. I believe that education should prepare students not only to acquire knowledge but also to apply it effectively in solving authentic problems they encounter in their personal, academic, and professional lives. I also believe that students learn best when they are actively involved in the learning process. Therefore, I adopt a student-centred approach that recognizes learners as individuals with diverse backgrounds, experiences, interests, and abilities. Rather than serving solely as a transmitter of knowledge, I see my role as a facilitator, guide, and mentor who creates opportunities for students to explore, question, collaborate, and discover knowledge for themselves.
