Dr. Akua Afriyie Karikari is a Neuroscientist and a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, College of Health and Allied Sciences, University of Cape Coast. Dr. Karikari is both a Fulbright and a DAAD scholar and completed her Master’s and Ph.D. studies in Neuroscience in the U.S.A. (University of Montana) and Germany (Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg), respectively. With over 10 years experience of teaching, she has lectured in various Schools and Departments in and outside of the University of Cape Coast. 

As a Neuroscientist, Dr. Karikari is a specialist in neurodegenerative diseases, neuroinflammation, neurotoxicology, cognitive and mental health and neuroparasitology. Dr. Karikari's research encompasses themes such as investigating the role of immune cells in Parkinson's disease, investigating the neurotoxicity of "akpeteshie" (a local gin), molecular characterization of experimental and human cerebral malaria, assessing the impact of alcohol consumption and sleep deprivation on cognitive performance in university students and the effect of temperature variations on cerebrovascular accidents.

Dr. Karikari is a gender and mental health advocate and is an affiliate of the Center for Gender Research, Advocacy and Documentation (CEGRAD). She has served as an academic advisor and the Examination and Registration Officer at the Department of Biomedical Sciences. She is currently the DAAD Research Ambassador for Cape Coast.
