Dr. Robert Peter Biney trained as a pharmacist and went on to do a PhD in Pharmacology specialising in neuropharmacology of biomolecules from natural products. He is a recipient of the Society for Medicinal Plants and Natural Products Research (GA) Young Researcher Award and the Novartis Next Generation Scientist Fellowship in early drug discovery where he worked to identify potential targets to modulate the inflammasome complex as means of controlling inflammation and neurodegeneration. Dr Biney is also a recipient o the International Brain Research Organisation's Early Carrier Research Award. His current research involves identifying novel scaffolds from natural products as novel antidepressants and understanding the neural mechanisms behind these agents. He is also involved in projects to identify neurotoxic effects of mining and other environmental chemicals, and their contribution to the development of neurological disorders after long term exposure to sub toxic amounts. Dr Biney is collaborating with Pharmacogenetics and Genomic Medicine Group to identify genetic determinants in variations in responses of CNS acting drugs. Dr. Biney is a member of Society of Neuroscientists of Africa (SONA) and the International Society of Neurochemistry (ISN) and the founding General Secretary of Ghana Neuroscience Society. He is actively involved in advancing neuroscience study and research in Ghana and champions the development of neuropharmacology as a field of study on the African continent

Associate Professor - ( Senior Member ) Department of Pharmacotherapeutics and Pharmacy PracticeHead of Department
Department of Pharmacotherapeutics and Pharmacy PracticeAs teacher, my goal is to create in every class that I teach, a learner-centered environment where the learner is the focus and takes charge of his learning in a journey towards becoming a lifelong learner. My philosophy as pharmacology lecturer can be described as a pharmacist providing pharmaceutical care plan for his patients. Just as the pharmacist assesses a patient's needs and develops the appropriate approach to the patient’s therapy, as a lecturer, I routinely assess my students' understanding of subjects I teach and provide the relevant tools, resources, and guidance , in a student-sensitive format, to help them strengthen their knowledge on the subject. I use dialogues, group work and stimulating presentations to ensure my learner’s attention is sustain throughout the course and ensure quality learning.
I create a positive and welcoming atmosphere where my students feel comfortable to ask questions, participate in discussions, and challenged to apply new concepts. I am attentive to each student's progress, and seek to provide bespoke feedback and support to help each student reach their maximum potential; ensuring equity in my learning spaces. I consider the classroom as a serious learning environment and thus have high expectations of my students. I insist on focus, engagement as well as professionalism during all interactions with my students as they will go on to become professionals. My students learn important professional values such assertiveness and problem-distillation and solving.
As a pharmacist, who regularly re-evaluate patients’ conditions and adjusts treatment plan accordingly, my approach as a lecturer adapts from this professional trait and I strive to continuously reflect on and evaluate my teaching methods and adapt them to meet the evolving needs of all my students. I seek to instill a passion for learning and impart an adaptable understanding of concepts I teach so my students become successful life-long learners on the subject. Ultimately, I develop in my students, a thirst for new knowledge that will positively impact the overall wellbeing of their patients.
