Prof. Akakpo’s area of interest is in gynecological and breast pathology, though as an anatomic pathologist practicing in Ghana, setting specific needs mean that it is unusual for him to restrict himself to only his area of interest. The scarcity of anatomic pathologists and the rudimentary nature of modern pathology in Ghana impose needs that have shaped his practice as a pathologist. His expertise and experience cover surgical pathology in general, molecular pathology, autopsy practice, pathology systems set up and quality, modern teaching methods and research.
As the first head of the department of anatomic pathology at the University of Cape Coast and the Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, he is used to starting new pathology departments / units and has always been at the forefront of the modernization of anatomic pathology in Ghana. Through continuing professional education and engagement with clinicians he promotes quality in Anatomic Pathology, including the proper capture and storage of pathology data through synoptic reporting to aid patient care and research. Partnering with startups and industry, he spearheads the modernization of anatomic pathology practice in Ghana.
His research experience spans the spectrum of his interests, expertise and experience in anatomic pathology. He leads his personal research, collaborates with other researchers (https://precisionmedicineabc.com/e-about-us/) and is open to further collaboration and partnerships that will result in meaningful impact on the people of Ghana.
