Dr. Alex Asante has over 34 years of experience as a in the field of Information Technology.
He has spent greater part of his working life at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) where he
is currently the Acting Director at the Directorate of ICT Services.
Dr Asante’s academic background as are follows:

Dr Asante pursued a programme in Computer Science from University of Science and
Technology (UST) and graduated in 1989. He worked as a Teaching Assistant at the same
institution. He left UST and had a brief stint as an Analyst/Programmer with Deloitte and
Touch, a Computer Consulting firm in Accra.
Dr. Asante joined UCC in April, 1993 as an Assistant Computer Programmer at the then
Computer Centre and has steadily risen through the ranks to Deputy Director at the Directorate
of ICT Services. Dr. Asante has contributed enormously and provided leadership to the
growth, development of ICT and digitization in the University. Dr. Asante was instrumental in
the creation of the Data Processing Unit (DPU) in the early 2000’s, which was set up primarily
to automate the processing of students’ academic and allied records. The mandate of the DPU
was widened and renamed Students Records and Management Information Systems (SRMIS).
He was the Coordinator at the DPU and later SRMIS. When the Directorate of ICT Services
was created in 2015, Dr Asante was assigned to the now Information Technology Training and
Support Section as the Head. He was later transferred to the Network and Infrastructure
Section. Until his appointed as the Acting Director of the Directorate of ICT Services in
August, 2023, he was the Head of Management and Information Systems Section.
Dr. Asante has served as member of several committees within the University. He was also for
several years Hall Tutor at the Kwame Nkrumah Hall and Oguaa Hall of the University.
Though not a full Lecturer Dr. Asante has over years taught and continues to share his rich
experience as a practicing information technology professional by lecturing on part-time at
both undergraduate and graduate students within and outside the University of Cape Coast.
Dr Asante has some publications to his credit in the areas of Computer Science, Information
Systems, Computer Applications and Computers in Education. He has also authored 2 books.
As a Course Coordinator of the College of Distance Education (CoDE) and the Institute of
Education, Dr Asante has written several Learning Modules and developed Study Packs for
students of these Colleges.
Dr Asante has also written some memos, technical reports and policy papers which have helped
shaped policy directions in the processing and management of students’ academic and related
records.

Dr Asante has attended a lot of workshops, seminars and training both within and outside
Ghana. He is a member of Internet Society of Ghana (ISoc, Gh) and is a regular participant at
the annual African Network Operators Group (AfNOG) training and meeting.
Dr. Asante is affable and has mentored and inspired a lot of young Information Technology
Professionals who are occupying various positions across the country.
Besides English Language, Dr Asante speaks and understands Chinese and French languages.
Dr Asante spends his leisure time reading on contemporary issues of interest and listening to
current affairs and events around the world.
Dr Alex Asante is a devout member of the Catholic Church. He attends mass at the Mary Queen
of Peace Catholic Church, Fourth Ridge, Cape Coast; where currently, he is the Vice President
of the Church’s Advisory Board.
